Gambian President: "Kill All Death Row Inmates By Mid-September"

"By the middle of next month (September), all the death sentences will have been carried out to the letter," was a statement given by Gambian president Yahya Jammeh. Gambia is a small country in west Africa. According to Gambia's interior ministry and Amnesty International, nine of these inmates were killed by firing squad on Sunday.

Reports say that, without warning, Sunday night they were taken out of their cells and shot to death. Amnesty International says that there are still 38 prisoners awaiting their death that Yahya Jammeh says will be carried out by mid-September.

In Gambia, homosexuality, murder, treason, and drug use among other offenses all warrant the death penalty.
